Governor Dave Heineman and State Senator Kate Sullivan headed up a delegation who spent Wednesday morning recognizing Elgin Elementary School for its’ recent selection as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
The bleachers on the west side of the gymnasium were full of students, parents and district patrons who came out on this day to celebrate this rare achievement. Only six schools out of 249 across the state were recognized with the designation. There was music, there were introductions, even members of the Wolfpack football team were recognized for winning the D-1 State Football Championship.
But it was the heartfelt words of the speakers present on this day which spoke volumes about how proud they, and we as a community, are of having a school achieving the highest of academic standards.
Superintendent Laurie Waterbury, first spoke, to welcome everyone to the celebration. “I would especially like to welcome our students and staff because “this celebration would not be possible without all of your handwork and dedication … Elgin Elementary is very deserving of this honor because of their high levels of achievement and the improvements they have made in the area of achievement. As an educator myself, I realize all the hard work that goes into achievements of this caliber. Everyone plays a part from the student to the parent to the teachers to the support staff to the administration to the school board and to our community.”
