CENTRAL CITY — Warming up at one end of the field were the defending state champion Wolfpack. On the other end were the winless Nebraska Christian Eagles.
On Friday night, it marked the only time the two teams would be tied in the game as Elgin Public-Pope John put up 38 first half points en route to a 44 to 8 victory.
Showing the form which led to a championship last season, the Wolfpack scored points on offense and defense in claiming their third victory of the season. Fans watched Wolfpack ball carriers slice through gaping holes created by blockers up front. Once in the open, they were hard for Eagle tacklers to bring down.
The Wolfpack took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field. Getting the touchdown was Blake Anderson on an 8-yard run.
The defense forced a three-and-out on the Eagles’ first possession. The Wolfpack got the ball back on their own 36-yard line and wasted little time. All the yardage came on the ground in the seven-play drive, the shortest gain being eight yards. They overcame a holding play to score when reserve Alex Pelster scooted into the endzone from 22 yards out. Anderson added his second PAT run to make the score 16 to 0 with just over four minutes left in the quarter.
The Wolfpack defense got into the scoring column on the Eagles’ next possession when a fumble in the backfield was scooped up by Anderson and returned for a touchdown, making the score 22 to 0.
