William C. Sprout, 81 of Elgin, NE passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Neligh, NE.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Elgin, NE with Pastor Michael Davis officiating. Interment followed at the West Cedar Valley Cemetery at Elgin with Military Rites by American Legion Post #229 and VFW Post #5816 of Elgin and the US Army Honor Guard. William Crawford Sprout, son of Charles and Vernocia (Dotson) Sprout, was born July 30, 1930 at Madison, NE. He attended country school near Madison and moved with his parents to a farm west of Elgin, NE in March 1940. He attended school at Maple Grove School District #123 west of Elgin, and graduated from Elgin High School with the class of 1948. He farmed until entering the service on January 2, 1952 and was stationed in Okinawa as a radio operator. On December 23, 1953, he was honorably discharged and returned to Elgin, NE to resume farming.
On May 27, 1956, Bill married Lois Elaine Hopkins in Neligh, NE. The couple lived and farmed west of Elgin their entire married life. Bill sold insurance for Antelope Mutual during the 1980’s and 1990’s.
Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church in Elgin, the CO-OP Board, the Antelope County Extension Board, Antelope County 4-H Committee, Allemande Left Square Dance Club and the Buzzard’s Roost Ham Radio Club.
He enjoyed woodworking, fabricating and fixing equipment and various other items, climbing the New Mexico Mountains in search of the elusive gold nugget and most of all, he loved his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Lois of Elgin, NE; two children: Craig (Merry) Sprout of Elgin, NE; Sarah Harrod of Pierce, NE; four grandchildren: Dr. Whitney Sprout and fiancé Justin Tramp of Ames, IA; Travis Sprout of Bartlett, NE; Hayleigh (Lance) Sudbeck of Norfolk, NE; Evan Harrod of Pierce, NE; a sister: Mary Gallishaw of Houston, TX; a sister-in-law: Mary Sprout of Redwing, MN; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Leland Sprout; and a brother-in-law: Chuck Gallishaw.
