Leo M. Eischeid

1914 – 2012

Leo M. Eischeid, 97 of Elgin, NE died peacefully Thursday, February 2, 2012 at his home.

He was born February 15, 1914 to Henry and Teresa (Friedman) Eischeid. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, NE and attended St. Boniface School through the eighth grade. After school and during the depression years, Leo farmed with his dad and brothers. In 1939, he began working for Victor Walls at the Neligh Hatchery and later managed Walls’ other hatchery in Clearwater, NE. In 1946, Leo purchased the Elgin Hatchery from Eldon Meyers. He installed a 52,000 capacity incubator and hatched chickens commercially for 28 years. He also sold Purina livestock feeds and vaccines, along with raising cattle and hogs on his farm. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elgin Chamber of Commerce.

On October 15, 1949, Leo married Josephine Zimmerer at Sacred Heart Church in Norfolk, NE. To this union three sons were born: Tom, John and George.

Leo passed away peacefully at his home on February 2, 2012 following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He is survived by his wife Josephine of Elgin, NE; sons: Thomas and wife Orfilia of Elgin, NE; John of Omaha, NE; George and wife Audie of Dallas, TX; granddaughters: Tracey of Seward, NE and Carey of Elgin, NE; grandson Aiden of Dallas TX; sister: Regina (Ben) Koenig of Elgin, NE; his special caretaker Zoila Rodas; along with nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Teresa; brothers: Joseph and Edward; and sisters: Alma and Henrietta Ridder.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, February 7, at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, NE with Reverend Ross Burkhalter officiating. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.
