Two more businesses have donated to The Homestead’s fund drive for a new roof. New donations have been received from Lordemann Insurance and Citizens State Bank. Their donations join previous ones received from Dean’s Market, Jerry’s Feed Service, Huffman-Levander Funeral Home, Tony & Nicole Levander, Elgin Insurance Services, Betty Salber, The Richard Kalvelage Trust, anonymous, Leo & Dorothy Dwyer, Robert Schrage - In Memory of Marie Schrage, match of the first $1,000 by an Elgin business, Sharon Wilkinson - In Memory of Irene Wilkinson, Lyle & Betty Mackel, Brian & Melvina Mack, Connie & Loren Nelson, Joyce & Dave Sullivan and LeAnn & Chuck Eggers. An additional donation was previously received from the Elgin Community Foundation.
A number of businesses have committed to matching funds for the project.
The goal for the fund drive is $25,000.
Due to a low occupancy rate the last few years, money for a new roof is not in the budget for the housing complex.
The Homestead is a non-profit, 8 apartment complex on Highway 14, just south of the library. The Homestead has provided affordable housing for the elderly for over 30 years in Elgin. HUD has recently allowed the designation to change to “Family”, with a maximum of 2 people living in each apartment. Rent is based on income and includes utilities.
