John H. Schindler

1936 – 2011

John Harold Schindler, son of Adolph and Elizabeth (Kerkman) Schindler, was born December 26, 1936 on a farm near Elgin, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin. He attended St. Boniface School, graduating with the class of 1954. On September 7, 1955, he entered the US Army, served time in Germany, and was honorably discharged on July 8, 1957. He returned to Elgin and began farming and raising hogs west of town.

Jack was united in marriage to Joan M. Stoltz on June 18, 1960 at St. Boniface Church in Elgin. The couple made their home west of Elgin and to this union 7 children were born: Gwen, Beverly, Marla, Mark, Paul, Greg, and Jeff. The couple continued farming and raising hogs for the next 51 years.

Jack was a life-long member of St. Boniface Parish and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Elgin Rural Fire Board, St. Boniface Parish Council, Stanton Township Board, and was very involved in the Thanksgiving Bazaar.

Jack’s most treasured times were spent with his family, following and supporting his grandchildren in all of their activities.

John H. “Jack” Schindler, 74 of Elgin, NE passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 19, 2011.

He is survived by his wife Joan of Elgin; mother Elizabeth Freese of Elgin; 6 children and spouses: Gwen Beckman and husband David of Elgin; Beverly Funk and husband Jim of Clearwater; Marla Neukirch and husband Don of Yankton, SD; Paul Schindler of Yucaipa, CA; Greg Schindler and wife Judy of Norfolk; Jeff Schindler and wife Tracey of Elgin; daughter-in-law: Peg Schindler of Elgin; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings and spouses: Gayle (Dolly) Schindler of Elgin, Carol Mescher of Elgin, Dave (Linda) Schindler of Odell, Dan (Sharon) Schindler of Elgin.

Jack was preceded in death by his father Adolf Schindler; step-father George Freese, son Mark Schindler, and brother-in-law Bob Mescher.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE with Rev. Ross Burkhalter officiating.

Interment followed in the parish cemetery.
