Study Shows Population Loss in Antelope County

Thank the U.S. Census for telling us something we already knew.

The population of Antelope County, along with that of many other rural Nebraska counties continues to decline.

According to a report released Friday by the State Legislature’s long-range planning committee, shows the estimated population of Antelope County to be 6,652 persons in 2009. The number reflects a decline of 800 persons since 2000. In terms of percentage, that’s nearly an 11 percent decline in population in the past 10 years.

We’re not alone, far from it. Seventy-six other counties in Nebraska showed a decline in population. The only counties which showed an increase in population were Lincoln, Dawson, Buffalo, Hall, Adams, Platte, Dakota, Thurston, Washington, Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Saunders, Lancaster, Saline and Johnson.
