On a day set aside each year to teach young children about fire prevention, Elgin fire and rescue personnel were called out to one of the most devastating accidents in recent memory.
On Wednesday morning, Oct. 6, at approximately 10:30 a.m., rescue personnel were called out to the scene of a one-vehicle accident approximately two miles south of Elgin. What they saw when they arrived was a Department of Roads dump truck with the cab crushed and two people inside.
According to an eyewitness at the scene, the truck had been headed northbound when a tire went off the edge of the road, causing the driver to lose control and roll several times, then flip end over end before landing coming to rest upright. Broken concrete was thrown over several hundred yards in the west ditch where the truck came to rest.
