Gary Dean Busteed was born February 24, 1945, in Neligh, Nebraska, to Vernon and Florence Lucille (White) Busteed.  Gary grew up on the family farm west of Elgin, Nebraska on the edge of the sandhills.  He attended Antelope County District 97 and graduated from Elgin High School in 1963.  An outstanding athlete, Gary participated in football, basketball, and track receiving many honors and awards.  Today, Gary still maintains a Nebraska Boy’s Basketball Individual Points Career record of 1,793 as achieved in 1963.

After graduating from Wayne State College in 1967, Gary taught Industrial Arts at Columbus High School from 1967 – 1980.  During that time he was an assistant track coach for nine years and also taught driver’s education for many summers.  Gary was employed with Sperry New Holland as an Assembly Supervisor, until the Columbus plant closed in 1983.  He worked as a general carpenter with Siebler Construction until starting Busteed’s Home Improvements in 1990, specializing in interior trim work, painting, and finishing.

On August 13, 1967, he married Linda Musser in Elgin.  To this union two children were born, a daughter, Amy and son, Bryan.  Gary and Bernice (Deichmann) Strehle were united in marriage on April 27, 1984, in Columbus.

Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, black powder shooting, visiting with his friends and spending time in his shop – the “man cave”.  He also treasured time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  Gary will best be remembered for his work ethic, tremendous athletic ability, love for hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors, his special skills with wood and teaching of young people.

As a family, we take comfort in the cherished and revisited memories of those who have shared with us how Gary has touched their lives and the home construction projects that are so visible throughout our community.  Catch you on the Flip-flop!
