Alvin Kallhoff, 84, Fargo, ND, died Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Manor Care Health Services.
Alvin “Smokey” Reynolds Kallhoff was born January 8, 1925 to William and Anna (Venteicher) Kallhoff in Antelope County near Elgin, NE. He attended St. Boniface Catholic Schools until tenth grade.
Alvin worked in a variety of agriculture related jobs in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Minnesota before arriving in North Dakota in 1948.
On April 19, 1949 he married Arlene Wheeler at the Wheeler family homestead near Wheatland, ND. Alvin continued to work in the agricultural field and even operated a service station in Alice, ND for a period of time before settling in Fargo.
Smokey worked for Northern States Power (NSP) for twenty years working his way up to Service Foreman in the Natural Gas Department. He then opened Al’s Pallet Company which he operated for four years. After selling the business he worked as a welding inspector for Northern Border Pipeline until retiring in 1983.
Smokey was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Fargo, including the Methodist Men’s Club and various board positions.
He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, earning the Pilgrim Lifetime Achievement Award through serving on their ritual teams, as Governor for Fargo Lodge #1410, and also as Deputy Supreme Governor for the Dakotas.
His hobbies included the flowers in his yard, building birdhouses and feeders, fishing, and helping others. He was a jack of all trades and a craftsman at many.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Arlene: two sons, Larry (Andra), Sioux Falls, SD, Rick, Fargo, ND; one brother, Floyd “Bud” (Phyllis), Arcadia, NE; two sisters, Delores Hill, Mercedes, TX, Evelyn (Wilfred “Red”) Arehart, Elgin, NE; and one granddaughter, Kasie; three grandsons, Brian, William (Melisa), and Micah, and one great grandson, Liam.
Smokey was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leonard and Gerald, an infant, and sister Irene Flora.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, Fargo.
