Fallen Remembered on Memorial Day

Bright sunlight illuminated tombstones and made the colors of flowers jump out Monday morning as Memorial Day was observed with ceremonies at local cemeteries.

As has been the custom through the years, Elgin residents turned out in large numbers to remember loved ones and honor those who have served in our military.

There was a large turnout at West Cedar Valley and St. Boniface cemeteries for the 11 a.m. program.

During a program which lasted approximately 25 minutes, patriotic music was performed by students from Elgin Public Schools, ceremonial flowers were placed at the war memorial and a 21-gun salute was conducted to honor veterans of military service now deceased.

Guest speaker for the morning program was Dennis Morgan, publisher of The Elgin Review.
