The Games of the XXXI Olympiad are set to get underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next month.
The greatest athletes in the world will converge in South America to pit their skills agains the best of the best, seeking medals of Gold, Silver or Bronze.
It’s only fitting that when the world converges in Brazil for two weeks (Aug. 5-21), that Elgin should be represented.
Although not competing, the skills of Dr. Derek Scholl will be put to the ultimate test as he helps Nebraska wrestler and Olympic Champion Jordan Burroughs seek a spot on the medal stand.
At the Olympics, Scholl will be working with Burroughs as he tries to repeat as a gold medalist.
When it comes to international wrestling, Burroughs is a superstar. A two-time national champion at the University of Nebraska, Burroughs is a four-time World Gold Medalist at 74 kg. His first match in Brazil will be on Aug. 19 and will air on NBC.
“In terms of getting the opportunity to work with Jordan, it’s a dream come true,” Scholl said Monday. “Going through college and graduate school I knew that I wanted to work with athletes on the highest level possible. I just never could’ve imagined the opportunity to work with the best in the world.”
He said he’s excited for Rio to get here and to do whatever he can to help Team USA. “I’m looking forward to working with some world-renowned healthcare providers and learning as much as I can along the way,” he said.
“I’m thankful to Jordan and his family for letting me go along for the ride as he chases his Olympic dream. It truly is a dream come true.”
Dr. Scholl will be traveling with Jordan to adjust him and work with him nutritionally while he’s cutting weight to make sure his body is functioning optimally a week leading up to the start of the competition. In addition, he will also be working with the United States Olympic Committee Volunteer Medical Professional Network while in Rio.
Two items of note leading into the games is the danger from the Zika Virus and terrorism.
“I will be taking every precaution that the USOC has advised (mosquito repellent, etc.,) to avoid infection. That’s all anyone can do really,” he said
As for terrorism, Dr. Scholl said that is always a concern. “Especially the closer and closer we get to the Games being here. However, as we’ve seen the past month or two, attacks can happen on our own soil. As crazy as the world has gotten, I don’t believe we should live in fear or potential doom or have the idea of potential doom stop athletes from achieving their lifelong dreams. Again, I can only trust that the country of Brazil is doing everything in its power to put security into place.”
Dr. Scholl is a 2005 graduate of Pope John XXIII Central Catholic High School. He went on to earn a Bachelors of Science degree in Nutrition, Exercise and Health Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011.
After attending and graduating from Cleveland Chiropractic College in 2014, he has been running the chiropractic branch of The Cornerstone Clinic in Lincoln.
Scholl is the son of Ronald Scholl of Elgin, son and stepson of Pam and Jyller McCullough of rural Petersburg and the grandson of Vincent and Sandy Kallhoff of Elgin.
