Librarian Joyce Sullivan Announces Retirement

After thirteen years at the helm of the Elgin Public Library, current Library Director Joyce Sullivan is leaving her position.
“I began in July of 2003,” Sullivan told the Elgin Review last Friday. Sullivan had been an elementary teacher at Elgin Public School for a number of years when she decided to retire. Her father was nearing the end of his battle with cancer and she knew she needed to spend what time she could with him.
“I replaced Mary Miller who was librarian for some time,” she said. Miller served from 1990 until 2003. She noted that the main reason she applied at the library was the people. “I love the people, have always loved the people.” Laughing, she added “It was a way for me to get away for a while, from home, and talk to adults.”
Over the course of the past thirteen years, Sullivan has witnessed more than a few changes in the workings of the library.
