Leonard was born April 14, 1930 on a farm near Elgin, Nebraska, to Patrick and Bernadine (Vollmer) Martin. He attended Star rural school in Antelope County and graduated from Elgin High School in 1947. He helped on the family farm after high school before enlisting in the Air Force in 1951. Leonard was part of the 90th Bomb Squadron (Pair-O- Dice) during the Korean War and was discharged in 1955. He met the love of his life after the war and married Virginia Potter on August 12th, 1957 in Petersburg, Nebraska. To this union six children were born and loved.
Leonard and family moved to Columbus in 1961 where he spent 34 years working for Dale/Vishay. After retirement, Leonard and Virginia enjoyed traveling and vacationed to numerous countries and cities with friends and family. He never missed the daily 10:00 coffee stop for cards and conversation.
Throughout his life, he took pleasure in coaching his children’s sport teams, attending all and any activity of his grandchildren, golfing with great friends, and following the Shamrocks, Huskers, Bluejays and the Fighting Irish.
He was involved with the Scotus Shamrock Club both during and after his children’s high school years and was a very active member of St. Bonaventure church serving as an usher, mass server, EMHC, member of the Parish Council, Finance Board, Perpetual Adoration, and Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of Sertoma for many years, serving as a past board member and putting out flags for holidays.
Growing up, Leonard had a reputation of being the nicest guy in town and this persona resonated throughout his life. He will forever be missed by his wife of 58 years, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two sisters and numerous friends.
