Elgin will be well represented when Girls State is held in Lincoln this June. The names of the two students chosen to attend, as well as the alternate, have been announced.
Selected to attend from Pope John XXIII Central Catholic High School was junior Elizabeth Selting. She is the daughter of Lynn and Amy Selting of rural Elgin.
Chosen to attend from Elgin High School was junior Jaime Hoefer. She is the daughter of Robert and Jaci Hoefer of rural Elgin.
Named as the alternate was Baylee Wemhoff, a junior at Elgin High School. She is the daughter of Greg and Joyce Wemhoff of Elgin.
Sponsors for the local students attending Girls State are Elgin Legion Post #229 Ladies Auxiliary and the Elgin Community Club.
Girls State will be held June 5-11 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln downtown campus. They will join hundreds of other high school juniors from across the state. Girls State is held in conjunction with Boys State.
The annual citizenship program, sponsored by the Nebraska American Legion, is designed to provide youths a better understanding of how city, county and state governments operate.
Special lectures and addresses will be delivered by experienced public officials and professional leaders throughout Nebraska. Invitations have been sent to the Governor and Secretary of State offices for special appearances at this year’s program. Also, national acclaimed motivational speakers are also scheduled to address the entire group.
American Legion Cornhusker Girls’ State is set up as a functional “51st state” and each boy learns how government subdivisions operate by actually doing the job.
Participants will campaign for offices, hold elections, take part in band and chorus, compete in athletics, and be involved in other varied activities as part of the citizenship training program. They will set up their own state government and draft bills.
