ELGIN — Top-ranked and #1 seed Elgin had no trouble opening the state playoffs against familiar foe Verdigre.

The Eagles scored the first time they touched the ball and never looked back as they defeated the Hawks 64 to 24 in a game which clearly wasn’t as close as the score might indicate.

Elgin (9-0) will continue their march through the playoffs on Wednesday night (tonight) when they host Wynot at 6 p.m. at Eagle Field. The Eagles defeated Wynot handily in the season opener.

Volleyball

ORCHARD — Elgin and Pope John Central Catholic squared off against one another in the opening round of the NVC Conference Volleyball Tournament Monday night.

Just as they had in two previous meetings, Pope John edged the Lady Eagles. This time the scores were 25-19, 25-14 and 25-9.

 

Pope John Crusaders

Football

ELGIN — Three touchdown passes from Josh Beckman and two standout defensive plays by Beau Henn helped give Pope John a 34 to 8 victory over Dodge in the opening round of the Class D-2 State Football Playoffs.

The loss ended Dodge’s season at 5-4. By virtue of the victory, Pope John (7-2) will play at Humphrey St. Francis Wednesday night (tonight). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

 

Volleyball

ORCHARD — Elgin and Pope John Central Catholic squared off against one another in the opening round of the NVC Conference Volleyball Tournament Monday night.

Just as they had in two previous meetings, Pope John edged the Lady Eagles. This time the scores were 25-19, 25-14 and 25-9.

O’NEILL — Playing in the consolation finals of the conference tournament, Pope John Central Catholic brought home the third place trophy with a sweep of West Boyd Friday night.

The Lady Crusaders defeated West Boyd 25-19, 25-15 and 25-22.

ORCHARD — After winning their first two matches in the NVC Conference Tournament, Pope John Central Catholic lost in the semi-finals to Chambers. Chambers swept the Lady Crusaders by the scores of 25-9, 25-17 and 25-21.

After defeating Elgin in the opening round, the Lady Crusaders advanced by defeating Orchard. They won the first two games by identical scores of 25-19, then lost the third game 25-23. Pope John then came back in the fourth game to post a 25-21 victory and advance in the tournament.

Chambers swept the Lady Crusaders by the scores of 25-9, 25-17 and 25-21.

CLARKSON — Down to games to none, Pope John Central Catholic turned things around to defeat Leigh in five games Monday night.

After dropping the first two games by the scores of 17-25 and 14-25, Pope John won the last three games by the scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 15-13.
