Months of preparation and hard work is about to pay off for 4-H exhibitors at the 2015 Antelope County Fair.
Stop by and you’ll find food items, photography, sewing, quilting, hobby items, canning, rockets and much more. Part of that “and much more” is animals. Lots of animals.
We’re talking about rabbits, pigs, cattle, horses, dogs, cats. You name an animal common in the state of Nebraska and it will probably be there.
Visitors to the fair this year will notice the absence of the ever-popular poultry show due to a statewide ban that went into effect during the recent Avian Flu outbreak. 4-Hers will be bringing record books and photos of the poultry that they normally would have entered and the photos will be placed in the cages at the poultry barn. Their showmanship will be graded with the use of a fake chicken. Eggs will also be judged this year. It is a situation that they must work around and, as the saying goes, when life gives you lemons you make lemonade.
For some of the animal exhibitors, they have the fair routine down pat. Every year however, there are “first timers”.
The Elgin Review was given the opportunity last week to observe a newcomer learning the ropes from an “old pro”. Let’s correct that, she is a “young pro”.
