Wolfpack Crush Warriors in Regular Season Finale

October 24, 2012 by lmorgan · Comments Off

ELGIN — Friday night’s football game featured two ‘streakers.’ The Wolfpack kept their winning ‘streak’ alive with a 72 to 26 victory. Their opponent, Neligh-Oakdale, saw their winless ‘streak’ continue as they ended the season 0-8.
In a battle of two teams heading in opposite directions, the Wolfpack coaching staff had much to be proud of and some areas they need to improve on as they head into the state playoffs with a home game Thursday against Franklin.
The offense is in fine shape. They racked up 58 first half points. The starting defense played well too, not surrendering any points to the Warriors. Special teams may need to be cleaned up as the Warriors returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Overall, it was another impressive effort for Coach Carlie Wells’ troops.
The Wolfpack, for the second straight week, started the game with a turnover. That would be the only blemish for the offense in the first half. After the defense forced a three-and-out, the Wolfpack drove 65 yards for their first touchdown. Levi Kerkman ripped off a 37-yard run to highlight the drive. Blake Anderson got the touchdown on a one-yard run. Quarterback Ross Schindler then connected with Andrew Heithoff for the two-point conversion at the 7:38 mark in the first quarter.

Familiar Foe Coming to Town for Playoff Opener

October 24, 2012 by lmorgan · Comments Off

A familiar foe will be coming to Elgin Thursday afternoon to face the Wolfpack in the opening round of the D-1 State Football Playoffs.
The Franklin Flyers, coached by Travis Tarman, will be the Wolfpack’s opening round opponent when the teams take the field for a 4 p.m. kickoff. Gates will open one hour before kickoff.
Last year the Wolfpack defeated the Flyers 54 to 13 in the opening round of the playoffs which culminated in the first state championship for EPPJ Coach Carlie Wells.
The Flyers enter the game with a 5-3 record. Playing in the Twin Valley Conference, the Flyers only losses were to Arapahoe, Bruning-Davenport and McCool Junction. Those three teams have a combined record of 22-2, meaning the Flyers have played some good teams this season. Franklin posted victories of Alma, Wilcox-Hildreth, Red Cloud, Heartland and Harvard. The Flyers, surprisingly, scored the same number of points that they allowed over the course of the season (315). They averaged just over 39 points per game on both offense and defense.
