EPS School Board Accepting Community Input

The Elgin School Board recently accepted the resignation of Steve Dennis, Superintendent of Schools and it is working to prepare for the hiring a quality superintendent to replace Mr. Dennis.

As the board plans for the hire, they are seeking the input of patrons, parents, students, staff and administrators.  The Nebraska Association of School Boards is assisting the board in the superintendent search, and has scheduled a visit to Elgin on day, January 26, 2012.  The board extends an invitation to the staff and community to participate in this visit to share personal thoughts regarding the district and the superintendent position.  Please offer suggestions pertaining to skills, qualities, or characteristics the candidate might possess in order to be successful in his or her role as superintendent and your views about the strengths of the school district and community.

The schedule times, for whom, and location is as follows:.

2:30-3:00 p.m., High School Students, ITV room

3:00-3:30 p.m., Classified Staff, ITV room

3:45-4:45 p.m., Certified Staff (3 staff members at 4:30), ITV room

4:45-5:45 p.m., Principal, Mr. Patrick’s Office

5:45 p.m., Board Planning Meeting, ITV room

6:30-7:30 p.m., Parent/Community, 7th Grade Room

In the event you are unable to attend the visit, please feel free to share your comments to the following questions:

1.  What are the strengths and achievements of the Elgin school district and community?
2.  What critical issues will the district face in the next three years.
3.  What background/training/experience should the new superintendent possess?

4.  What leadership style/personal attributes are important in the new superintendent?

Wolfpack Let Fourth Quqrter Lead Slip Away Against Stuart

STUART — Victory slipped through the Wolfpack’s fingers Friday night as Stuart dealt the Wolfpack their sixth loss of the season by a score of 39 to 34.

Elgin Public-Pope John held a two point lead, 26 to 24, entering the fourth quarter. But, the final eight minutes of the game belonged to Stuart as they outscored the Wolfpack 15 to 8 to claim the victory.

Points were hard to come by for both teams as the score was tied 16-all at halftime. Then, in the third quarter the Wolfpack outscored their opponent 10 to eight to take the lead.

Ryan Larabee led Stuart with 14 points. He was the only player on either team to score in double figures.

The Wolfpack were led in scoring by Nash Schindler and Evan Parks, each tallying eight points.

Wolfpack Shut Down Lady Broncos

STUART — Four Wolfpack players scored in double figures Friday night as Elgin Public-Pope John defeated Sturart 61 to 32 in girls basketball action.

It was a mismatch from the start. Stuart came into the game having won just one time and it showed on the court as the Wolfpack jumped out to a 17 to 6 lead after the first quarter. In each of the four quarters the Wolfpack would score in double figures. At the other end of the court, Stuart was held to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.

Senior Lauren Selting ripped the nets for 18 points as she was the game’s leading scorer. Chelsi Mescher tossed in 12 and Stephanie Bode added 11. Sydney Schumacher came off the bench to score 12 points in her best offensive showing of the young season. Altogether, seven Wolfpack players broke into the scoring column.

Two Wrestlers Win Medals at Gibbon Invite

GIBBON — Competing against primarily Class C schools, Elgin Public-Pope John held their own Saturday at the Gibbon Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

Five Wolfpack wrestlers competed at the tournament and two brought home medals.

“It was good to see different competition,” Coach Doug Jones said about the invite. “We did well against Class ‘C’ wrestlers.”

Brett Kinney led the Wolfpack medal parade winning the 113-pound weight class. He pinned both wrestlers he faced at the invite.

Special January Meeting

Distance Learning Room, EPS

January 9, 2012, 6:00 PM

President Waterbury called the special January 2012 Meeting to order at 6:10 p.m.  Board members present were Ryan Reestman, Steve Heithoff, Kim Wells, Laurie Waterbury, Stan Heithoff and Bob Hoefer.  Also present were Principal Adam Patrick and Marcia Herring of the NASB.

President Waterbury led the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Waterbury reminded everyone that a copy of the Nebraska Open Meetings Law was posted in the meeting room.

School board meeting notice complied with Meeting Notice Policy #204.07.

Steve Heithoff motioned and Stan Heithoff second to approve the Agenda.  Motion carried, vote 6-0.

The school board held a consultation with NASB representative, Marcia Herring, regarding the superintendent search.  The board discussed possible goals and identified characteristics necessary in a superintendent for Elgin Public School.  Tentative dates for Planning Meeting II is January 26, 2012 and Planning Meeting III for February 8, 2012.

The next regular board meeting will be on Thursday, January 12, 2011 at 7:30 PM at the EPS Distance Learning Room.

Bob Hoefer motioned and Kim Wells second to adjourn the meeting.  Motion carried, vote 6-0. The meeting adjourned at 8:04 p.m.
