Date Announced For Spelling Contest

The 2010 Antelope County Spelling Contest will be held Monday, Feb. 22, in the multi-purpose room at Clearwater Public School.

Representatives from the following schools will participate — Elgin St. Boniface, Elgin Pope John, Elgin Public, Neligh-Oakdale, Orchard and Clearwater.

Registration for the contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. for fifth and sixth grade students. The contest will begin at 3 p.m. Seventh and eighth grade registration will begin at 3 p.m. with competition to follow. Beginning this year, each school district will be responsible for the Antelope County Spelling Contest on a yearly rotation basis, according to Bill Kuester, superintendent of Nebraska Unified #1 School District.

Parish Mission to Be Held February 21-23

St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin will be the site for a Parish Mission/Forty Hours event to be held Sunday through Tuesday, Feb. 21-23. 

The mission will be held in the contest of 40 hours devotion to the Holy Eucharist.

Father Scott Courtney, serving as retreat master, has asked that everyone bring their own Bible to the evening talks.

Schedule for the Mission is as follows:

Sunday, February 21

7 p.m. — Exposition, Evening Prayer, Talk and Benediction (refreshments to follow)

8:30 p.m. and following — Eucharistic Adoration by parishoners.

Monday, February 22

11 a.m. — Mass

Noon — Workers please try to come to adoration over your lunch hour

3 p.m. — Divine Mercy Chaplet

6:30 p.m. — Rosary

7 p.m. — Evening Prayer, Talk and Benediction (refreshments to follow)

8:30 p.m. and following — Adoration by parishoners.

Tuesday, February 23

8:15 a.m. — Mass

Noon — Workers please try to come to adoration over your lunch hour

3 p.m. — Divine Mercy Chaplet

6:30 p.m. — Rosary

7 p.m. — Evening Prayer, Talk and Benediction (refreshments to follow)

Thursday, February 24

7 p.m. — Parish Celebration of Reconciliation will take place at the church.

Filing Deadline Looms for Incumbents

The days are winding down for incumbents to file for re-election to elective office in Antelope County.

Seats up for election are for the mayor of Elgin currently held by William Evans, and two Council seats currently being held by Shirley Nissen (Ward One) and Ken Jochum (Ward Two). As of Tuesday morning, Nissen was the only one to file for re-election.

Seats up for election on the District #18 Board of Education are currently held by Steve Heithoff, Mary Bauer and Ryan Reestman. So far, only Heithoff has filed for re-election.

During the past week, Democrat LeRoy Kerkman filed for re-election to the Antelope County Board of Supervisors in District #7.

Republican Sandy Knapp of Neligh has filed for re-election as county treasurer.

In the sheriff’s race, Democrat Mark Duncan of Orchard has filed for election.

Incumbents have until Tuesday, February 16, 2010 to file for re-election. The filing deadline for non-incumbents seeking public office is March 1, 2010. 

The primary election will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010. The general election will be in November.

Schindler of Neligh — District #5 Supervisor; Republican Neil Williby of Royal — District #3 Supervisor; Democrat Jerald Schwager of rural Orchard — District #1 Supervisor; Republican Corey Curtis of rural Brunswick — District #1 Supervisor; Republican Cassey Kallhoff of Tilden — Antelope County Assessor; Republican Mike Long of Norfolk — Antelope County Attorney; Republican Bob Moore of Elgin — Antelope County Sheriff; Dwaine J. Peetz and Joe McNally, both of Neligh — Antelope County Airport Authority; Ron Rice and Jeff Carpenter of Neligh — Neligh-Oakdale Board of Education.

Lester E. Varn

1923 - 2010

Lester E. Varn, 87, of Council Bluffs, IA, passed away January 27, 2010.  

Memorial services were held Monday February 1, 2010 in Omaha.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; children Vi (Richard) Sain, Richard (Bev) Varn, Dan (Debbie) Varn; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Dolores E. Henn

1934 - 2010

Dolores Elaine Henn, daughter of Sylvester and Ada (Stokes) Henn was born October 5, 1934 on the family farm near Elgin, NE. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin. She attended St. Boniface Elementary School, graduated from St. Boniface High School with the class of 1952 and attended Creighton University in Omaha, NE.

She returned to Elgin, NE where she worked as a teller for the Bank of Elgin. In 1960, Dolores moved to Aurora, CO where she worked as an Executive Admin Asst. at the Samsonite Corporation for many years. Dolores then worked at Aquanomics and also for Walker Parking Consultants as a Business/Office Manager. She retired on March 1, 1996. 

Dolores was a 40 year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3224 in Aurora, CO. Her many hobbies included bowling, reading, gardening, playing cards and crocheting. She was a super avid sports fan and loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.

Dolores E. Henn, 75 of Aurora, Colorado died Sunday, January 31, 2010 at her home.

She is survived by her son: James Henn of Aurora, CO; 3 grandchildren: Joey, Justin and Kyra, all of Colorado, Special Friend: Joe Caponiti of Aurora, CO; 7 siblings and spouses: Floyd (Marlene) Henn of Clearwater, NE; Roger (Joan) Henn of Crofton, NE; Dean (Mary Jane) Henn of Elgin, NE; Dan (Raedean) Henn of Elgin, NE; Lois (Bob) Camp of Yankton, SD; Mary Jane Overton of Dickinson, ND; Terry (Jan) Henn of Elgin, NE; along with many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. 

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents: Sylvester and Ada Henn,Sister-in-law Marjorie Henn, and niece Cindy Bohaboj.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE with Rev. Dan Andrews officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. 

Memorials are suggested to St. Boniface Elementary School and Pope John Central Catholic High School.
