ELGIN — Playing on their home court for the first time this season, Pope John Central Catholic split a pair of matches Thursday night.

In the final match of the night, every player who suited up saw action on the floor as the Lady Crusaders defeated Rising City 25-7 and 25-12.

 

NIOBRARA — Competing at the Niobrara Tournament last week, the Pope John Lady Crusaders won two matches. Against Verdigre, Pope John was victorious by the scores of 25-13, 21-25 and 25-12.

ELGIN — After nearly four quarters of head-banging, slobber-knocking football, the outcome of Saturday’s Pope John Central Catholic-Newman Grove football game rested on the toe of a German foreign exchange student.

With 13 seconds left on the clock, Bluejay Michael Woischnor 33-yard field goal fell just short of the crossbar, giving the Crusaders a 22 to 20 victory in a hard-fought game whose outcome will be felt for days to come. 

 

ELGIN — For the first two sets, Elgin was the dominant team. However, in Thursday night’s best-of-five match, O’Neill St. Mary’s came storming back to win the match 22-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 15-5.

CHAMBERS — Competing at the Chambers Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Pope John Central Catholic dropped all three matches.

Against Humphrey High, Pope John fell by the scores of 25-16 and 25-19. 

Death Notices - Filsinger, Phillips and Mackel

Orville Filsinger passed away peacefully on September 15, 2009 with his family by his side after a brief illness, in Loveland, CO. He was 87 years young.

Gehrig-Stitt Chapel & Cremation Service was in charge of Orville’s care and funeral arrangements.

 

Pastor Vonnie (Yvonne) Phillips, 49 of North Loup died Wednesday, September 16, 2009 as a result of an automobile accident east of Ericson, Nebraska. She was cremated.

 

Mrs. Gene (Geri) Mackel, 70, of Atkins, IA, died Sept. 15, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, IA.

Services were held Saturday Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at the St. Paul’s Catholic Church at Newhall, IA, by Father Jack McClure.

Knieval

Michael and Joyce Knievel are proud to announced the birth of their son, Jesse Robinson, born on Sept. 12, 2009. He weighed eight pounds and 11 1/2 oz and is welcomed home by big brother, Oscar, 3.

Grandparents are John and Jeanne Knievel of Elgin, Freddie Stewart of Bellturbet, Ireland and the late Mary Stewart. Great grandfather is Herman Ridder, Albion.

Cleanup Day in Elgin to be Held October 10

The Elgin Chamber of Commerce/Community Club has announced the date for a Fall Cleanup Day.

The event, the third of its kind in less than two years, will be held Saturday, October 10.

On that day, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and lasting till noon, volunteers will pick up items placed along the curb to be hauled away.

Pope John Paper Drive to be Held on Saturday

The Pope John students will hold a paper drive on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Juniors and 7th graders are in charge of the project. The following are contact persons: Clearwater and Rural St. John – Alex Dierks (485-2618), Neligh – Tyler Schrage (887- 5271), Petersburg and Raeville – Eric Schiltmeyer (843-5678), Elgin – Kyle Knievel (843-5889) and Sister Pat (843-5461).

They will collect: (1) Newspapers, Phone Books, Paperbacks and Shredded Paper, (2) Magazines and Slick Papers and (3) Flattened Cardboard.
