ELGIN - Postponed two days because of a snowstorm, the Pope John Wrestling Invitation was held Monday afternoon. Plainview won the team title with 204 points.  Pope John placed 3rd at 122, Elgin High School finished 11th with 60 points.



CHAMBERS — Chambers 45, Pope John 43

Monday night marked the battle of two undefeated teams, each seeking a victory to wrap up the Pre-Christmas portion of their schedule. The event was the finals of the Pre-Holiday Tournament, pitting undefeated Pope John Central Catholic against the undefeated Lady Coyotes.  Pope John (5-1) will seek to rebound from the loss on Friday when they host a Holiday Tournament.


CHAMBERS — Chambers 55, Pope John 45

Playing in the finals of the Pre-Holiday Tournament, Pope John Central Catholic fell to host Chambers by the score of 55 to 45. Pope John will next be in action Friday when they host a holiday tournament.


 Elgin Public Sports resume action this Friday in the Cedar Rapids Tournament.



Leaders of the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA), the oldest youth rodeo organization in America, appointed Monte Snider and Tanner Olson, both of Bartlett NE to the Wrangler High School All Star Rodeo Team.

This is the first ever corporate-sponsored youth rodeo team. Monte and Tanner earned a position on the Wrangler High School All Star Rodeo Team based on leadership qualities, academic eligibility and athletic achievements.

Monte is the son of Alan and Kathy Snider. His grandparents are Lynn and Patricia Wilkinson of Neligh and Don and Barbra Snider of Elgin.   Tanner is the son of John and Chris Olson.  He is the grandson of Bonnie Olson of Bartlett and Charles and Margy Bartak of Neligh.

Kerkman, Cakebread, Martin & Kallhoff Celebrating Milestones

The family of Louis Kerkman is requesting a card shower for his 80th birthday to be observed on January 1, 2009.   Cards will reach him at PO Box 405, Elgin NE  68636.


The children of Tim and Karen Cakebread are proud to announce the upcoming celebration of their twenty-five years together. There will be a dance open to the public at 9:00 p.m. on  Saturday, January 3 at the Tilden Legion Club.


The family of Duane “Pepper” Martin is requesting a card shower honoring his 80th birthday on Wednesday, December 31.  His mailing address is PO Box 201, St. Edward, NE 68660.


The family of Eve Kallhoff of Elgin is requesting a card shower in honor of her 80th birthday which was December 30.  An open house will be held at the Elgin Community Center from 1 pm to 3 pm on Sunday, January 11. Cards may be sent to 504 Elm Street, Elgin, NE.

Niewohner Brothers Honors Long-time Employees At Christmas Party

Niewohner Brothers held their annual Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Albion Country Club. They recognized three employees that have been with Niewohner’s for 25 years or more. The three honorees were Pat Seier - 29 years, Stan Heithoff - 26 years and Don Schmitz - 25 years.

Former Pierce Co. Assessor Looking At Antelope County

In the wake of a recall election where County Assessor Julie Harrison was removed from office by a more than two-to-one margin, the County Supervisors held a special meeting Tuesday, Dec. 23, to explore how to again open the office. Since Harrison’s removal, and the resignations of two employees, the office has been closed.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Supervisors discussed filling the vacancy. Then, as a possible development which could signal the direction they may take, the Supervisors allowed former Pierce County Assessor Duane Dean access to the Assessor’s Office so he could look at the records to see if he would be interested in filling the position on a temporary basis.

Knights Sponsoring Free Throw Contest This Sunday

The local chapter of the Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring their annual KC Free Throw Contest this  Sunday afternoon, Jan. 4, at St. Boniface Gymnasium. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. with competition to start at 1:30 p.m.

Boys and girls ages nine to 14 are eligible to compete. However, 14-year-olds who are playing high school basketball may not participate in the free throw contest.
