12 & Under Girls Second at League Tournament

Elgin’s 12 and Under girls go 3-2 in the league tournament at Neligh to place 2nd. In their opening game June 22, Elgin took a 10-5 victory over Tilden. Getting hits for Elgin were Anna Heilhecker with a triple and Nick Payne, Paige Meis, Heather Bauer and Marie Meis with a single each. Anna Heilhecker started pitching for Elgin She struck out two and walked four. Amy Nelson came in to finish the game. She struck out four and walked three.
Tournament play continued on Sunday, June 24 with Elgin losing to Battle Creek in their first game 5-6. Elgin only had three hits in the game. Amy Nelson had two singles and Marie Meis had a single. Amy Nelson handled the pitching duties for Elgin. She struck out three and walked three. The loss dropped Elgin to the losers bracket in the double elimination tournament.
In their second game against Plainview, Elgin pulled out a 15-14 victory. Paige Meis led Elgin with a home run and a single. Nicki Payne, Anna Heilhecker and Amy Nelson had two singles each, while Heather Bauer and Sydney Kerkman each had a single. Anna Heilhecker started out pitching for Elgin. She struck out two and walked six. Amy Nelson came in to finish the game. She struck out one and walked two.
Elgin’s third game of the day was a 13-3 victory over Tilden. Paige Meis again led Elgin in hits with three singles. Calli Krebs added two singles and Grace Henn, Nicki Payne and Kaylee Martinsen each had a single. Anna Heilhecker was the starting pitcher. She struck out one and walked three. Amy Nelson finished out the game striking out the last three batters.
Elgin needed just one more win to get into the championship game. In the fourth game of the day, Elgin faced Albion, the number one seed in the tournament. Elgin pulled off the upset by beating Albion 10 to 7. Once again Paige Meis was the top hitter for Elgin with a triple and a single. Marie Meis and Sydney Kerkman each had a single. Amy Nelson pitched a complete five innings for Elgin. She struck out ten and walked five.
Elgin would now face undefeated Battle Creek in the championship game. Elgin fought hard in their fifth game of the day but came up short. Battle Creek handed Elgin a 10-8 loss. Paige Meis once again led Elgin in hitting with a triple, a double and a single. Grace Henn had two singles and Anna Heilhacker had one single. Anna Heilhecker pitched for Elgin. She walked three. Elgin played hard throughout the tournament. The coaches are very proud of these girls. They end their season with a 7-4 record. Great job!
